Not Too Early, Not Too Late
Two things matter to us equally: that our students use technology at a pace their hearts and minds are actually ready for, and that they graduate fully equipped to use the technology they’ll encounter as adults. This page explains how we hold both, together, on purpose.
Developmentally Timed
We introduce technology in careful stages, matched to what a child is actually ready to handle at each age—not to what’s simply available. Every grade band has a reason for what it does and doesn’t include.
Fully Equipped to Graduate
By the time a student crosses the stage, they’ve learned to use technology—including AI—with wisdom, discernment, and real skill. The goal was never to avoid technology. It’s to be ready to master it.
Hampton Park exists for a specific purpose—educating and discipling students to become more like Jesus. Our approach to technology isn’t a separate policy bolted onto that. It’s one outworking of it:

Why It Matters
We didn’t land on this approach by instinct alone. It reflects a growing, credible body of research—alongside our own convictions about what it means to form a whole child. We’ve kept the specific data below to what’s independently verifiable, and named every source so you can look into it yourself.
The Cost of a Phone-Based Childhood
Jonathan Haidt’s The Anxious Generation (2024) traces a sharp rise in teen anxiety, depression, and self-harm to the arrival of the smartphone and social-media in the early 2010s, and points to sleep loss, fragmented attention, and social displacement as key mechanisms. It’s the single most-discussed research synthesis behind school phone policies nationwide right now—including ours.
The Deep-Reading Brain
Literacy scholar Maryanne Wolf’s Reader, Come Home argues that sustained, slow reading builds a distinct neural circuit for inference, patience, and empathy—one that has to be built through real practice with continuous text and that competes for the same developmental years as fast, fragmented screen reading. It’s a core reason handwriting, physical books, and sustained silent reading stay central in our early grades.
Attention & Self-Regulation
The NIH’s Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study—the largest long-term study of child brain development in the country—along with clinical guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics, consistently links heavier early screen exposure to weaker self-regulation and attention and links active, hands-on play to stronger executive function. This is a large and still-developing research area, and we hold it with appropriate caution—but the direction of the evidence is consistent enough to act on.
Boredom Isn’t the Enemy
Unstructured, unstimulated time is when children’s minds do their most original work—daydreaming, imaginative play, and working through a hard problem without a shortcut nearby. Constant digital stimulation crowds this out. Protecting genuine downtime, in class and at home, is part of the same strategy as limiting screens—not a separate idea.
The Job Market Our Students Are Graduating Into
World Economic Forum, Future of Jobs Report 2025
Employers surveyed by the WEF expect 39% of core job skills to change by 2030, with roughly 92 million existing roles displaced and 170 million new ones created. The fastest-growing skills employers name are creative thinking, resilience, and analytical judgment—not the ability to operate a specific app. That’s exactly the kind of durable capacity we’re building for, not around.
A Real-World Course Correction
Sweden’s Ministry of Education & PIRLS International Reading Assessment
After a decade of aggressive 1:1 device adoption—tablets even in preschools by 2019—Sweden’s own fourth-grade reading scores fell between 2016 and 2021. In response, Sweden’s government reversed course, investing hundreds of millions of kronor to bring printed textbooks and handwriting instruction back into classrooms. We’re not the only ones asking these questions, and we’re paying attention to what other systems are learning the hard way.
This Year’s Changes: 7th, 8th & 9th Grade
Starting this year, we’re putting the approach above into practice with a more structured Chromebook policy for our 7th, 8th, and 9th graders. Here’s exactly what’s changing.
A Tool, Not a Companion
- Each student is assigned their own Chromebook, kept in secure on-campus storage—not carried around all day.
- Chromebooks are opened only when a teacher directs it, in class. Homework defaults to paper.
- Every student is required to use a physical planner to track assignments without a device.
- The device typically goes home once a week (Thursday), plus an occasional additional night when a teacher genuinely needs it—always logged, so it stays occasional.
- Chromebooks never go home over the weekend and lock automatically at 10:00 p.m. on any night they’re home. The school also provides a take-home charger.
The Transition Year
- During the school day, 9th grade follows the identical rule as 7th and 8th: no Chromebook open without a teacher’s direction.
- Every assessment has a physical study option, so a student is never stuck needing a device just to review before a quiz.
- Unlike 7th and 8th grade, 9th graders take their Chromebook home nightly—a first, structured taste of the responsibility they’ll carry through high school. Device access locks at 11:00 p.m.
